Image of the Month: November 2015

Lofoten Islands, off Norway, by Stuart Whitfield.

A midnight Scandinavian shot presented an ideal photographic opportunity for Stuart Whitfield though it did present some challenges as the club member explains.

This photo was taken in July, at midnight, off the Lofoten Islands of Norway. I was using an Olympus micro four thirds OM-D E-M1 camera with a 12-40mm lens.

Initially, I thought that the exposure might prove tricky – at this time of night and hand held, on the deck of a rolling boat!

There was more light than I realised. The settings I used were:  FL12mm, f2.8, ISO200, and that gave a shutter speed of 1/80th sec. With the image stabilisation system on, this worked out just fine.

What makes this shot work for me is the dramatic lighting on the underside of the clouds and the reflections off the sea's surface.  Also being in the right place at the right time and a good slice of luck."
