A message from our new Chairman

 Hello

As the new chair of Knaresborough Camera Club, I'm keen to connect to potential new members and also reconnect with all our previous members and tell you about our exciting programme. And, of course, to say how much we would love to see you join us.

You might be aware that most of the autumn-winter season's activities now take place on Zoom. This enables members to enjoy discussing their favourite hobby from the comfort of their homes and it allows us to call on the services of guest speakers and judges from all parts of the country.

So far, the speakers have given us valuable insights on the rules and myths of composition, how to use our camera equipment, and how to see beauty in parts of the built environment that most of us might overlook. We've seen examples of top-notch photography in our open and nature competitions and the judges have given us so many useful pointers about how to enhance our work.

Whether it's online or in person, members tell us they love learning about photography together in a friendly and supportive group.

Take a look at what we've lined up for 2022 on the programme page of our club website.

It would be great to have you with us.

Best wishes

Matthew Webber, Chair

Knaresborough Camera Club

Image of the month December 2021

Puffin with sand eels by Stuart Whitfield is our photo of the month. It secured first place in our December camera club nature competition. The judge liked the sharpness and composition along with the challenge of exposing for both black and white in the same image. An overall excellent competition winner. We all love a good puffin photo.

Image of the month November 2021

Tower Bridge by club chairman Matthew Webber is our latest image of the month. It's taken from the Lights category of our monthly project images.

Image of the month October 2021

The first placed winner of our October Open club competition was this image Taking in the Splendour at the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi by Duncan Snell. The judge liked the architecture details of this special and spectacular place. He said that the leading lines of the pillars, symmetry of the arches and people and tiles were well photographed. A worthy competition winner.

Image of the month September 2021

Our September image of the month is Man made ‒ Handmade by club member Julie Valentine. It was one of the popular entries in our September monthly project with the theme Man made.

Image of the month August 2021

Our image for August is Helios 3 by club member Robert Harris. This was a popular entry into our monthly competition. An excellent photo with an intriguing name referencing the Greek god of the sun and the golden ripening of the crops along with the mysterious number three.

press release September 2021

Using a zoom has taken on a different meaning for Knaresborough Camera Club as it invites new members to join for its autumn programme.

Matthew Webber, who chairs the club, is confident that the Zoom format evenings introduced last year will continue to be a hit with members by offering access to more guest speakers and judges from throughout the UK.

Matthew said: "While we might return to a physical venue at some point, the Zoom calls have been hugely popular with our members who enjoy receiving insights from experts as far afield as Birmingham, Cardiff and London in the comfort of their homes."

The club offers two meetings a week during its September to April programme. The full group meets at 7.45pm on Wednesday evenings with Tuesday evenings set aside for Camera Talk, a smaller gathering where members learn how to improve their skills.

The new programme, which starts this week, includes talks entitled All the Gear and No idea, Lakes and Coastal Photography and Scottish Wildlife. There will also be opportunities for members to seek group feedback on their work as well as a series of competitions and some outdoor events.

The club welcomes anyone with an interest in photography regardless of their skill levels. Information about enrolment and the club programme is available on the Knaresborough Camera Club website.

AGM minutes 2020-2021

Minutes of annual general meeting, 15 September 2021

(Held by Zoom)

 Present
14 members and 5 committee members.  Apologies from Mike Morley (competition secretary).

The minutes of the last meeting held 7 October 2020 were approved.

Chairman’s Report
All meetings for the 2020/21 season have been held over Zoom.  Members are missing social interaction and a decision will have to be made soon on how to progress on this. The club has made the best of having to hold virtual meetings – speakers and judges have joined us from all over the country, which had enhanced the programme, giving us a bigger and more varied pool of speakers.  There will also have to be a decision on where we meet as Chain Lane wanted our booking to be for every Wednesday and we are not able to commit to weekly  physical meetings yet.

The Centre on Gracious Street has been booked for three meetings up to Christmas, though a discussion will need to take place with members on the appetite for physical meetings. Participation in competitions has been very good, though print entries are still on hold.  Zoom also produced some lively discussions, with members happy to join in to contribute to the conversations.

Phil thanked the members and the rest of the committee for all their support during a challenging year.  Mervin Straughan also thanked Phil and the committee for a good choice of judges, who gave good feedback and an interesting programme for the year.

Treasurer’s Report
It is difficult to compare figures with the previous years as the account have now been synchronised (to 1 September) with the dates of the club season and the new date for the AGM.  Although we gained about five to six new members, the club lost a few existing members.  Money earned from Amazon spend via the club link increased this year.

As a result of the fees from Zoom moving from monthly to annual, some money was refunded. Speakers and judges cost £40 more than last year, but they all gave good quality presentations and feedback. Secretaries’ expenses are solely for the competition entry software.

YPU insurance has gone up slightly, though YPU subs have reduced.  Rent has reduced as the club is no longer using Chain Lane for meetings or storage of our equipment and hire of equipment.

The subscriptions are to remain at £50 per member as the club is unsure what the membership numbers will be like.  Payment of fees for rooms to hold physical meetings will eat into club funds and the club doesn’t own a projector, so reserves are needed in the event a new one has to be purchased.

The club accounts were approved

From all the entries, this summed up for him the theme of water perfectly. We love it as well.

Image of the month December 2020

Our December 2020 Image of the month is called 'Keep Safe' and was taken by club member Robert Harris. It was the winner of our club 'New Normal' competition and was highly praised by the judge. We like the clever montage of many Covid street signs and the balance of bold colours and street textures. We see so many of these signs everywhere we go these days but never think to take photos of them, so hope this photo is an inspiration.
